On winning the toss Finches skipper Chris Britz elected to bat first in the 50 overs each encounter. Openers James Isbell and Tommie Predgen proceeded to 47 in the 11th over when James was bowled by spinner Ali Raja for 26. By the 20th over it was 88 – 3. Both Tommie with 36 and Chris Britz were caught. The next 16 overs saw the Wokingham spinners tighten the run flow with just 45 scored by the 36th over. At 133 Josh Pistorius was bowled by Raja for 29.
By 145 two more wickets fell so 6 down with only 10 more overs remaining. Then fine strokes and running between the wickets by Mike O’Donoghue and Jed Crerar saw the 200 up with two overs remaining. Mike was then caught for his 37 then two more fell as Finches closed on 220 – 9. For Wokingham it was a return of 3 – 37 for Ali Raja and two wickets apiece for Andy Rishton and Chris Peploe.
By 11 overs Wokingham has slumped to 37 – 3. The three wickets were shared by seamers Liam Bulteel, Lewis Sharp and Chris Britz. By the 15th over Chris had dismissed Andy Rishton so to a scoreline of 59 – 4. But with opener Ben Curran joined at the crease by Jayden Barson the visitors then batted very well to improve the position. At the half way point it was 97 – 4. Then after a 16 overs partnership and 72 runs put on the fifth wicket fell at 131 in the 31st over. Lewis Sharp had Barson lbw for 30. Then the seventh fell at 153 with Chris Britz securing an lbw the first ball of his second spell.
With still 13 overs remaining a valuable 26 were gathered by Ben Curran and Chris Peploe. Then at 179 the fine innings of 86 by Ben Curran ended caught behind off spinner Josh Pistorius. The 8th soon fell at 180 then with 31 needed a tense finish was seen. At 204 Liam Bulteel trapped Nawaz lbw for the ninth wicket. At 205 the match dramatically ended with Chris Britz running out Ali Raja with a direct throw. So with Chris Peploe left not out for his useful 33 the Wokingham attempt on the total ended with a 15 run close Finches win. Three wickets for skipper Chris Britz in his farewell match and two each for Lewis Sharp and Liam Bulteel.
Finches remain 15 points clear in the division with 3 matches remaining.
All four TVCL sides saw action with three being successful and the thirds in a very close losing match.
The unbeaten Seconds in Division 3A visited Purley on Thames Firsts. Batting first Finches posted 284 – 8 with a maiden century of 101 by Dilan Patel well assisted by skipper Stuart Parsons with 90. Purley posted 224 – 9 so a 60 run win. Aryan Gavankar with 2 – 14 and Guy Ashby 2 – 38 led the bowlers.
On the Leas the visitors to the Thirds in 4A were Royal Ascot firsts. The visitors posted 268 – 7 with 4 wickets for seamer Tom Allen. Finches were just short by only 9 runs at 259 – 9. Ben Simmons with 87 and Louis Crerar 50 shone for the batters.
In 7A the Fourths were visitors to Slough Fifths. The hosts were dismissed cheaply for 113 with Kailan Patel returning 4 – 13 and Ethan Chapman 3 – 23. Finches comfortably won by 10 wickets at 114 without loss. Joe Simmons 50 not out and Henry Crowhurst also 50 not out ensured the vital third win in a row.
For the Fifths in 10C it was a commanding win at Bradfield Thirds. Finches hit 325 – 5 in their 40 overs with Rui Wright 105 assisted by David Crerar 52 and Jason Dubery 45. With Bradfield having no real chance against the score batted quietly to 139 – 3. So a 186 run win for the Fifths.
